Usually the smell or odor in the aquarium occurs due to dead plants, left out food given to fish , dead fish or any insects or even due to climatic conditions.

Fishes also produce large amount of ammonia which is left out in the water, there much be sufficient bacterial growth in water to decompose the excess ammonia which takes weeks or even months. Its always recommended to change about 25 % of water in aquarium at least in a week to get good water with balanced pH.

Also there are many good chemical solvents in market that keep the water in good state. But solvents doesn't gives better result if the bad smell in water is due to dead plants, insects or other similar instances.

If you also have such interesting questions or want to convey something interesting and useful to others.
